Job Responsibilities

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina is seeking an Accountant Manager in the department of Financial Services.  This role will provide managerial oversight of accounting systems, procedures, and financial reporting functions within the Office of Financial Services while directly supervising accounting staff.  In addition, this role is also responsible for the following:

  • Oversees the integrity of the general ledger and subsidiary systems by reviewing and approving journal vouchers, reconciliations, and complex accounting transactions to ensure accuracy and timely resolution of discrepancies.
  • Oversees core accounting operations including bank reconciliations, fixed asset and Construction in Progress (CIP) accounting, endowment and trust activity, related party accounting, and grants invoicing.
  • Reviews supporting schedules and documentation to ensure accuracy of financial reporting and audit readiness.
  • Assists in developing, documenting, and strengthening accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard institutional assets and reduce financial risk.
  • Assists in coordinating the monthly and year-end close processes, including review and approval of journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules to ensure accuracy and completeness of the general ledger.
  • Assists in the preparation, drafting, and review of annual financial statements, footnotes, and required supplementary information in accordance with GAAP and GASB standards.
  • Oversees preparation of audit schedules and supporting documentation and serves as primary liaison for assigned work areas.
  • Provides financial guidance and training to campus departments, deans, and administrative leadership to promote understanding of accounting processes, reporting requirements, and compliance standards. 
  • Identifies and implements process improvements to enhance efficiency, reporting accuracy, and internal control effectiveness.
  • Participates in ERP enhancements, reporting automation initiatives, and system upgrades. Assists in development of improved close procedures and reporting workflows. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree with accounting courses and professional experience in related area such as accounting, auditing, banking or finance. Demonstrated progressive experience in accounting and financial reporting. Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. Experience supporting audited financial statements and coordinating audit documentation.  Strong written and verbal communication skills. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with a high degree of proficiency in Excel. Must be available to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, during peak periods such as fiscal year-end.

 

Preferred Qualifications

A CPA is preferred. Masters Degree in Accounting is an eligible substitute for CPA. Demonstrated supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
